Citizenship and Government

"One Woman, One Vote" - Witness the 70-year struggle for woman suffrage-from fledgling alliances to a sophisticated mass movement. From the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton demanded the right for women to vote, to the last battle for passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Discover why the crusaders faced entrenched opposition from men and women who feared that the woman's vote would ignite a social revolution. This video is appropriate for high school and adult audiences. (120 minutes)

"The Rage for Democracy"
- This videotape reflects the results of a three-year national survey of citizenship participation - and the lack of it - in American civic life. Host Anthony Lewis of The New York Times presents four stories that test the ideal of democracy against the reality of everyday life, investigating the influence of race, income and education on citizen activism; the role of religion in setting the political agenda; and the emergence of single issue activism. The program incorporates the commentary of political scientists from Harvard, the University of Chicago, the University of California-Berkeley and Boston College. This video is appropriate for high school and adult audiences. (60 minutes)

"The Power Game" - This four-part series goes behind the scenes with Hedrick Smith into the internal workings of the federal government to learn from the experts who work at the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill, in the embassies, and in the White House. The titles include:

  • "The Congress"
  • "The Pentagon"
  • "The Unelected"
  • "The Presidency."

These videos are appropriate for high school and adult audiences. (Each tape is 60 minutes.)

"Why Bother Voting" - This videotape encourages young people to vote, speaking to them in their own language and showing them how their voices can make a difference. The program uses humor, celebrity cameos, state-of the-art graphics and music to explain the mechanics of voting and the importance of the decision-making process. Appearing in the show are stand-up comics, cast members of "Saturday Night Live" actors, rap musicians and others, who help young voters understand why elections matter. This video is appropriate for high school and adult audiences. (60 minutes)
