Law On The Line

The Middlesex County Bar Foundation sponsors the Law on the Line series. The various topics are as follows:

"Affirmative Action" - Host Bryan Garruto talks with attorney David Rubin of the Piscataway Board of Education, regarding the determining factors in the decision to hire Debra Williams and fire Sharon Taxman at Piscataway High School. Attorney Stephen E. Klausner talks candidly in the program about the procedure of the Supreme Court in regard to Taxman v. Piscataway Board of Education.

"Arbitration and Mediation"
- This show discusses the definition of Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR), the differences between mediation and arbitration and the advantages and disadvantages of ADR.

"Auto Insurance" - Host Arlene Reiter and guest attorneys address a variety of issues dealing with automobile insurance including, how to choose proper coverage, what politicians can do to reduce auto insurance rates, types of auto insurance fraud, and the procedures necessary for filing a lawsuit.

"Breast Implants" - Attorney host Bryan Garruto and attorneys Patrick J. Bartels and Fred Ira Echkaus answer frequently asked questions regarding breast implants.

"Children with Special Needs" - This show discusses the legal right of children with special needs to have access to an appropriate public school education and how parents can become effective advocates for their children.

"Civil Court" - Host Richard J. Simon talks with Superior Court Judge Phillip Lewis Paley about the Special Civil Part of Middlesex County. The three subsections within the Special Civil Part, landlord/tenant court, small claims court and regular special civil are described.

"Elder Care" - Attorney Michael K. Feinberg and Judith A. Tucker, R.N. share with host Arlene M. Reiter how important planning for the future is for seniors and their family members. Definitions of such terms as power of attorney, advance health care directives and medical proxy are given.
"Family Law" - Guest attorneys John Paone Jr. and Marcia Hendler discuss with host Arlene M. Reiter new developments in family law focusing on divorce and child support.

"Megan's Law Update" - Attorney Caroline L. Meuly talks with Assistant Prosecutor Peter S. Hamerslag, who heads the Megan's Law Unit in the Prosecutor's Office. The program examines what Megan's Law is and how it came into being, as well as how it works, who it affects and the strengths and limitations of the law.

"Prosecutor's Office" - A behind the scenes look at the Prosecutor's Office is the subject of this two-part series. Part 1 focuses on the function of the Grand Jury and features a mock grand jury trial. Part 2 examines how the Prosecutor's Office handles capital murder offenses. (Each tape requires a $50 deposit.)

"Real Estate Law" (Parts 1 & 2) - A two-tape series of the basics of buying and selling a home, this show highlights important topics such as clauses in a real estate contract, mortgage contingencies, who holds the deposit and under what circumstances a buyer may get deposit monies returned. (Each tape requires a $50 deposit.)

"Residential Landlord/Tenant Law" - Attorney Daniel Lebar moderates this program as attorneys Jose Abreu and James F. Horvath discuss the issues that arise when the landlord/tenant relationship begins.

"Victims of Crime Compensation Board" - Attorney and Host Caroline L. Meuly discusses the functions of the Victims of Crime Compensation Board with attorney Lorraine Pullen, a member of the VCCB. The program focuses on the criteria for eligibility, the monetary limit for payment to a victim and the resources available for a victim or the victim's family.

"Workers Compensation" - Attorney and Host Bryan Garruto and attorneys James J. Kinneally III examine what workers' compensation is and why it was created. The explanation of when coverage begins and when coverage may not be granted is also examined.
