STEEN REAPPOINTED TRUSTEE OF NEW JERSEY STATE BAR FOUNDATION
Richard H. Steen, a Lawrenceville resident and Princeton attorney, has been reappointed a trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting law-related education and giving all New Jersey residents a basic understanding of the legal system. He is the immediate past president of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA).
Mr. Steen has been a member of the NJSBA for 36 years and served on the Board of Trustees as a Section/Committee Trustee from 1998 to 2004. He is the founding chair of the association's Dispute Resolution Section and received the ADR [Alternative Dispute Resolution] Practitioner of the Year Award from the section in 1998-1999.
He was recognized with the Distinguished Legislative Service Award of the New Jersey State Bar Association in July 2002 for his efforts in drafting the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act, which was signed into law in July 2003. A noted author and lecturer, Mr. Steen received the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education Distinguished Service Award in 2006.
Mr. Steen is a former chair of the NJSBA Legislative Committee, Construction Law Section, Special Committee on Dispute Resolution, and Task Force on Medical Malpractice.
A member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Mediator Standards, Mr. Steen also serves as chair of the Administration Subcommittee of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. In addition, he is a member of the Court's Arbitration Advisory Committee.
Mr. Steen has over 30 years' experience in all aspects of construction law and the resolution of complex construction disputes. He has been involved in the assertion or defense of numerous substantial construction claims in state and federal court, and has served as an arbitrator or mediator in hundreds of ADR proceedings.
Within the American Arbitration Association, Mr. Steen is a member of the National Roster of Neutrals, National Construction Mediation Roster, National Construction and Commercial Arbitrator Training Faculty, Construction Arbitrator Master Panel, Large Complex Case Panel and New Jersey Public Sector Construction Panel. In addition, he serves as chair of the New Jersey Construction Advisory Council and is a partnering facilitator.
Mr. Steen is a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association (ABA) and serves as co-chair of the Construction Litigation Subcommittee of the ADR Committee for the Litigation Section. He is a member of the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry, has served on the Division 1 Steering Committee and was a member of the Ethical Standards for Mediation Task Force. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
Mr. Steen is a Master and a past president of the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi American Inn of Court for Alternative Dispute Resolution. He served the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association as chair of the ADR Committee and is a former director for the association. He holds memberships in the Mercer County Bar Association and the New Jersey Institute of Municipal Attorneys.
Active within his community, Mr. Steen is a member of the Lawrence Township Municipal Court Mediation Committee and is a deacon/former president, trustee and elder of the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church.
A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, Mr. Steen was a founding director of the Seton Hall Legislative Bureau and the first editor-in-chief of the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and engineering sciences from Drexel University. His law firm, Richard H. Steen, LLC, is located in Princeton, New Jersey.
