Bar Foundation to Sponsor Annual Conference on Substance Abuse, Schools and the Law

The New Jersey State Bar Foundation will sponsor its free, annual conference on “Substance Abuse, Schools and the Law” on December 9, 5:30 – 8:10 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square off Ryders Lane in New Brunswick.

 

The conference is open to educators, substance awareness counselors, student assistance counselors, school administrators, attorneys, psychologists, social workers or interested citizens who work with young people to prevent and/or counsel on substance abuse.

 

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the enactment of student assistance counselor legislation, a distinguished panel will address key issues and will take questions from the audience.

 

Gary L. Vermeire, program coordinator for the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Unit of the New Jersey Department of Education, will discuss “Substance Abuse Prevention: School Responsibilities.”  

 

David B. Rubin, Esq. of Metuchen, noted counsel to school districts and counsel for In Re T.L.O., will examine “Legal Precedents for Changing School Climate.” 

 

Daisy Rocha, a student assistance counselor for New Brunswick schools, will share “The SAC Perspective.” 

 

David G. Evans, Esq. of Pittstown, attorney, author and consultant on drug testing issues, will discuss “Student Drug Testing.”

 

William John Kane, JD, CSW, will serve as moderator.  Mr. Kane is director of the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program.  Mary Ellen Tully, Esq., president of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation, will deliver the welcoming address.

 

A complimentary sandwich buffet will be served from 5:30 – 6:10 p.m.  The program will start at 6:10 p.m.
