BAR FOUNDATION-FUNDED SPANISH EDITION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HANDBOOK DEBUTS
The public is invited to a reception introducing a Spanish-language translation of the Rachel Coalition's manual, Surviving Domestic Violence: Your Legal Rights, on Wednesday, September 23, 12 p.m., in the first-floor lobby of the Essex County Hall of Records, 465 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Newark, New Jersey. The reception is presented by Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., Essex County Executive, and the Board of Chosen Freeholders in conjunction with the Rachel Coalition, Partners for Women and Justice, and the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. The event is free and open to everyone.
The Spanish edition, as well as an earlier English edition and an updated reprint, is made possible by a grant from the Bar Foundation with funding from the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey. Thanks to the Bar Foundation, 4,000 copies of the handbook in Spanish and 4,000 copies in English will be made available statewide to domestic violence victims, their advocates, service providers, iawyers, courts, physicians and relevant social agencies.
Although abuse and violence in the home can devastate families and disrupt communities, too many people still erroneously believe that domestic violence is a non-issue or that it does not occur in suburban households. In fact, says the Rachel Coalition, domestic violence is a very real problem that crosses all cultural, socio-economic and racial lines. To combat it successfully, its victims must know what resources are available and how to access them. That need was the impetus for the original handbook in 2007, published to great acclaim in partnership with the Bar Foundation.
Surviving Domestic Violence: Your Legal Rights is filled with useful, practical information about victims' rights and legal options, statewide resources including hotline numbers, forms and handy detachable resource cards. Both the first-time Spanish edition and the revised English edition contain updated detailed information essential for victims and their advocates.
Parking is available in the juror parking lot of the Essex County Hall of Records. For more information about the event, please contact Arleen Muney at the Rachel Coalition, 973-765-9050, or by email at amuney@jfsmetrowest.org.
