Boomer 101: Essential Legal Tools for Turbulent Times (Retirement Planning and More)

CIRCLING 50 OR BEYOND?  LEARN TO PLAN YOUR LEGAL AFFAIRS TO REALIZE A HAPPY, SECURE FUTURE AT FREE BAR FOUNDATION SEMINAR

Whether you're an almost-boomer, nearing retirement or newly retired, your legal needs differ from those of people in other circumstances. To get the most from what should be one of the most enjoyable stages of life-especially in this uncertain economic climate-you need reliable, up-to-date information to create a plan that best serves your particular needs.

The public is invited to a free seminar, "Boomer 101: Essential Legal Tools for  Turbulent Times," Thursday, October 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center just north of the intersection of Route 1 and Ryders Lane in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The program is sponsored as a public service by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and conducted by attorney Lawrence A. Friedman of Friedman Law, Bridgewater.

Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, other legal documents, retirement plan options and insurance should reflect your current station in life rather than the circumstances under which the documents were first drawn up.  What's more, individuals approaching 50 and their elders face unique issues when thinking about the future. To address those issues properly, many questions need to be asked-and answered:

o   Do I need to create a new will and trusts now that my children are grown?

o   What if my spouse or parents become disabled?

o   What if I need long-term care?

o   How can I pass funds to my descendants without a large tax bite?

o   How will funding education for my children or grandchildren affect my options?

The seminar will address those and other questions in the context of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, living wills, IRAs, 401(k)s, pensions, estate taxes, and long-term care planning.

A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.

A former chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association Elder Law Section, Mr. Friedman received the New Jersey State Bar Association's Distinguished Legislative Service Award for drafting legislation to help New Jersey citizens use special needs trusts to preserve disability benefits.  He has been certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation, a certifying organization accredited by the American Bar Association.

A recipient of a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in taxation and J.D. degree from New York University School of Law, he is a frequent lecturer for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and various colleges, schools and other professional and community organizations.  In addition to presenting yearly programs on elder law and special needs trusts for ICLE, Mr. Friedman has contributed to numerous treatises on elder and disabilities law and tax planning and has been published in a number of periodicals including New Jersey Lawyer, New Jersey Law Journal, Journal of Taxation and Elder Law Attorney.  He has served on the board of directors for many nonprofit organizations including the Arc (formerly Association for Retarded Citizens) and Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of New Jersey.  He has also served as a director of the New Jersey chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and was recognized in New Jersey Super Lawyers.

Admission to the seminar is free; however, advance registration is required. To register, please visit the Foundation online at www.njsbf.org or call 1-800-FREE LAW. The program is made possible by funding from the IOLTA Fund of the State Bar of New Jersey.
