The Courts


"Justice For All" -This two-part series features insightful interviews with judges, lawyers, court clerks, mediators and others who explain their jobs and key issues facing our nation's courts. (Each tape is 30 minutes) The two tapes are:
  • "Overview of the State Courts" - which explores how cases enter and move through our state systems. It covers trial, appellate and supreme courts, as well as juvenile, traffic and small claims court.
  • "Overview of the Federal Courts" - which examines the federal system from the District Courts to the U.S. Supreme Court. Specialized federal courts are profiled.

"This Honorable Court" - This series profiles the Supreme Court as both a source of stability and a force for social change and provides the viewer with an unprecedented look behind-the-scenes of this American institution. Appropriate for grades 9-12 and adult audiences. (2 hours)

"Understanding the Courts" - Court procedures in criminal and civil cases are explained in this two-part video. Titles are:
  • "Anatomy of a Criminal Case"
  • "Anatomy of a Civil Case." Appropriate for grades 7-12 and adult audiences. (35 minutes)

"Guilty or Not Guilty? - You Decide" - This 20-minute videotape depicts a criminal trial in which members of the viewing audience serve as jurors and decide the outcome of the cases. Instructions are given to the viewer (juror) on various points to consider when weighing the guilt or innocence of the accused. The video is accompanied by a teacher's guide. Appropriate for a high school audience.

"Juror Orientation" - Using a simulated trial, the 15-minute video walks potential jurors through each step of their responsibilities, informs them of the role they will play in a civil or criminal hearing and answers commonly asked questions. The video is an appropriate educational tool useful to students as well as those individuals selected for jury duty.

"Mediation: Is It For You?" - Mediation is viewed as the wave of the future. What is it? How does it work? This videotape answers these questions with an overview of this rapidly growing field. Dramatizations as well as interviews with mediation professionals are used. Three scenarios where mediation may be an option are profiled: a homeowner's dispute with a contractor; a child custody case; and a conflict between neighbors. (18 minutes)

"Crime and Punishment" - Exploring the evolution of crime and criminal penalties in America, this video examines the influences that create new laws and how our historic attitudes toward crime affects the way we treat criminals today. Appropriate for a high school audience. (2 hrs.)
